Review of Frances Ha (2013) by Sebastian O — 03 Jan 2014
This is what "Girls" would be like if it were a film - and it's an excellent show. Frances Ha is a light, humorous take on life as a struggling citizen in the city of New York. It's essentially a montage of Frances' life, which is achieved to near-perfection due to its precise editing and a beautifully-executed performance by Lena- I mean, Greta Gerwig.
It's a beautiful tale that has you rooting for the protagonist from beginning to end. Speaking of which, the final shots of "Frances Ha" was one of the most inspiring finales to an indie film, right up there with "Beasts of the Southern Wild". Be it for the editing, directing or most probably acting, I will be disappointed if it does not receive a single Oscar nomination (but not because it's likely, 'cause it isn't).
Music, cinematography, it all just fits together, and inspires one to pick up a camera and just make a film. No sophisticated plot points, no obvious climax, no surprising twist (thought that small twist in the end was very refreshing). The film doesn't even need colour to reach the heights that it does reach. An excellent film for ages 15+!
