Review of Four Rooms (1995) by Benedick L — 11 Dec 2008
Like Tim Roth's character in the film, I did not know what to expect from this film. Well, that is slightly a lie. I was expecting a run of the mill straight forward comedy. Instead, the film is an uneven mix of manic and comedy.
The first story doesn't really set the film that well as it leads it in a direction that eventually is a dead end. Saying that, this was better at the start then anywhere else in the film. The second story takes a while to get going.
Whilst the element of mystery is enticing at first, it is drawn out a little too long for the audience to eventually care what the solution is. The third story could have been more mischievous. Instead it went for controversial shocks that were gratuitous and added nothing to the film as a whole.
The final story, probably the best directed and written out of the four (this was done by Mr Tarantino) ends the film in an exchange of witty dialogue and fast paced camera movements. It is fortunate then that the film ends like this because any other segment would have ruined it.
Not brilliant but zany enough to keep me watching for the hour and a half that it ran.
