Review of Four of the Apocalypse (1975) by Tristan P — 31 May 2008
Horror maestro Fulci does a spaghetti Western, and what do you know - it's soaked with blood. A strange dream of a film, this has 4 survivors of a vigilante fascist "cleansing" of a town crossing the desert as they make their way to freedom in some racy destination.
Cue a number of random and (mostly) violent encounters, including a rape, a massacre of pilgrims, hallucinations on peyote and cannibalism. Strangest of all is the rather sentimental and rather long sequence in which a whore gives birth to a baby in a town full of male prospectors, who weep at new life coming into the world.
There's great performances from Millian as the worst of bandits, Pollard as a soak and, surprisingly, Frederick as the whore. One of the more unusual films of the genre.
