Review of Four Daughters (1938) by Steve G — 18 Mar 2018
Jazz seriously sucks. I wouldn't have let anyone in my house who discredited Beethoven. Bold-talking people might have been seen as charming at one time, but we now understand they're nothing more than empty salesmen. There's something I hate about it. Yet it's still better than most of the crap today. I don't belong with my wife as much as you do, let me kill myself. wut? Kind of a weird movie... yet there's some emotion in there. Hammy performances... yet you want to watch them. There's a tragic pathos about it. So much pathos. John Garfield is heart-wrenching. Not what I expected. Two kinds of men, meeting head on. I'm not sure what the moral is. The loud charming one should have been right because he's so clean and glossy? A bit melodramatic at times. Is it just me or does Ben look 50? I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. I would have preferred Mickey's marriage working out. The grass is always greener?
It would have been better if it had at least shown Ann & Mickey genuinely happy for a while.
Mixed feelings. But one character so memorable, that teh strength of the movie isn't so much a factor in my thinking on it (same with Scarface, which is crap).
I LOVE that Felix lost & got humbled. Ann should understand Mickey is not like her and respect him and not whine about it, wanting him to be more like her and Felix.
Some strong life metaphors. A lot of ambivalence about this one.
Emma = <3.
