Review of Forever My Girl (2018) by John M — 04 May 2018
For the country fans, I guess? So this is about a girl who gets left at the alter (Jessica Rothe). Her would-be-groom (Alex Roe) runs off to be a big shot country music star, but when he comes back to what might as well be called Small Town, Louisiana eight years later, he is going to see what he can do mend some fences, especially when there is more at stake than he originally knew.
I don't care much for country music by any stretch of the imagination, but that's not to say that I can't get into movies like Crazy Heart or Walk the Line. I didn't know what to expect from this small little movie that grossed $16 million in its theatrical run, so I tried to approach this with an open mind.
It wasn't long before I hopped off the neutral train, and this one is actually pretty bad. If I was stretching to say something nice about this, I would say that the girl in this, Jessica Rothe, is decent as an actress.
Of course, if you don't have anybody to play off of, even good actors start to look bad with the quickness, and I think that Alex Roe delivers one of the worst performances in recent memory. His acting ability is just not there, but that's not the only issue.
His character is written to be a complete boob, and it's hard to feel empathy for him, which is a major problem for your main character. Leaving the bride at the alter speficially to follow your career is not something anyone would do on a whim, you would sit down and have a conversation about it beforehand.
He gets followed and harassed by fans like he is Austin Powers, and while I personally don't care for stereotypically country songs, I just don't see the appeal to this music featured here. It's just bland country pop without any soul, and they are songs you would tune out 100% of the time if they were to come on the radio.
You are never given a reason to like him other than that this happens to be his story, and to top it all off, he is corny and constantly sweating all over the place. There may be a couple of token characters, but this is just a glaringly white movie.
You know all of the beats this is going to hit before it gets there, and this never at any point feels realistic. I suppose if you have experienced this exact situation, you might be able to get into it, but I promise you that there isn't a damn person out there that has gone through this.
These are cartoon characters in a written for a weak television show situation, and I can't think of a single reason why you should watch this Nicholas Sparks wannabe movie.
