Review of Foreign Correspondent (1940) by Stephen D — 24 Aug 2007
A B-list Hitchcock - with an unconvincing though attractive heroine, a wildly over-egged closing speech and the worst ever Dutch accent by a child amongst its defects, Foreign Correspondent doesn't have the spark of 'The Lady Vanishes' or 'The Prisoner of Zenda' but it is fascinating as a propaganda piece aimed at bringing the US into World War Two on the side of Britain in 1940, as Joel McCrea, playing an apolitical American reporter, comes to realise that the pro-peace movement is nothing more than a cover network for pro-Nazi spies and ends up staying in London to fight Britain's corner on the airwaves despite the Blitz dropping around him.
Includes a quite amazing air crash scene for its period.
