Review of Foreign Correspondent (1940) by Carlos R — 28 Mar 2011
Its few flaws in the plot and script are evident, and it's very far from the level of Hitchcock's greatest films, but the high levels of entertainment, fun and suspense it offers are quite remarkable.
The characters are very well performed, and elaborated... they're believable. The plot is amazing and very interesting, but the ending's resolution and more specifically the final scene fell too easy and a little bit cheap (I understand the necessity of patriotic messages in some Hollywood films of this period, but that inevitably feels very dated nowadays, and particularly in this film it seemed really forced).
However there were some excellent scenes masterfully done technically, specially all the windmill sequence (top-notch suspense), and the plane crash into the ocean at the movie's climax, that doesn't have very much to envy Titanic (taking in account of course, the technological limitations that films had in the forties).
