Review of Force Majeure (2014) by Nick U — 20 May 2015
I really dig Ruben Östlund and his style of moviemaking.
As always when his name are on top of things we get a static, lovely shot film, with a certain amount of fresh air in the sour movie business winds.
We get to know a family - the woman is from Norway, the man is from Sweden and they seem to share two kids from earlier realationships, I don't know for sure. They are at some luxury ski hotel and everything seem anoyingly luxurious. Then they witness an avalanche, and everything change.
This is a daring film, that is a slow grinder. You can't predict much, but it never bring big surprizes either. Some great freakout scenes and the painfully embarrasing scenes takes place - and I dig it. The mentioned embarrasing stuff may be the reason some people see it as a comedy. I don't, but it's not the darkest family drama either.
A great narrative and editing combined with beautiful shots makes it original, a bit mysterious and very solid. Well acted by most involved, and some open moments that scream for explanations is lifting it even higher.
Another solid film from the innovative Swede.
8 out of 10 413's.
