Review of Forbidden Planet (1956) by Doris R — 25 Jan 2009
Another first in its days - according to the introduction to the movie at the Sparks (special effects) Festival 2009 - this time it concerned cinematography. We were treated to an ad (in those days they were melodic and still made sense as well as being on target...), an interval entertainment piece with a ten minute countdown, the then usual cartoon which was followed by the initial 'pink' tv version and, after ten minutes, replaced by the 'proper' big screen version. What a difference indeed - and not only in size.
This movie basically covered the fact that even if you do bad unintentionally, you still have to take responsibility. Having the naive, yet feisty female seeking the protection of the men around her is also typical for the era - as is the fact that while this story is supposed to take place in our future, there are only men on the spaceship which, of course, adds to the 'danger' for the female. Those were the days, I guess... ;P.
