Review of Forbidden Planet (1956) by Byron B — 02 Aug 2012
The production design is high class. The excellent quality of the special effects is unexpected for the time. Although Robbie the Robot is too big and clunky to be taken seriously. The inspiration from The Tempest is used uniquely.
The cast all play their roles to help you really be drawn into this future world. Leslie Nielsen stated on one of the DVD special features, that this movie was like a pilot for the Star Trek series. I was thinking that exact thought before watching the interviews.
Gene Roddenberry must have been a fan. A decade before Star Trek aired, the space crew, the visual look of the transporter (which isn't a transporter here), the communicators, and the basic plot structure among other things in this movie could be direct forerunners for the popular franchise.
I love it!
