Review of Forbidden Planet (1956) by Ross V — 12 May 2017
That rarest of Science Fiction film that asks the Big Questions while still managing to deliver spectacle, horror, hubris and one of the most famous 'bots of all movie time, Robbie. It may seem dated, but the central themes are as topical today as they were back in '56 : technological humanity will never entirely free itself from the troublesome aspects of humanity--sorry Transhumanists!--and progress can be towards the grave as much as it can be towards the Future.
FP belongs on the short list of the very best SF films along with such luminary works as 2001, the original Russian Solaris, and the Keanu Reeves free The Day the Earth Stood Still.
