Review of Forbidden Planet (1956) by Jim F — 10 May 2011
Without question the sci-fi movie that all other films since must be compared. Made in 1956 it still is superior to most films of this genre that have followed. The special effects given the lack of CGI compare to and are better than many films produced today.
The concept of monsters from the ID (a virtually unknown concept to the public in the mid 50's) propels Forbidden Planet from the ranks of the B movie sci-fi category to rank with the greats of all time. It is a wonderful film that can be watched repeatedly. Frankly I am surprised someone hasn't tried to remake it but perhaps we are better off if it isn't. I'm thinking of the remake "The Day the Earth Stood Still" which arguably is the worst remake ever made.
