I highly recommend this film and consider it one of the most important foreign movies of the 1950's. The subject matter is of course difficult and sad, but the movie manages some moments of humor. It is hard to find children acting in such a compelling and credible way.
A film with the timeless message of innocence lost, and how children are affected the most by the brutality of war. Don't miss it.
