Review of For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) by Anna S — 22 Jan 2009
Excellent adventure film starring Gary Cooper as a man caught up in a Spanish war who helps a group of gypsies who are hiding in a mountain. To be honest, I didn't know what this book/movie was about, so I was pleasantly surprised when I watched it.
Though it's nearly three hours, I was never bored and it actually flew by. Cool action moments, nice ensemble, it's cool that Katina Paxinou won Best Supporting Actress as the gypsie leader in the mountain.
Beautiful use of color, I especially loved the scene at night with Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman, just having them on the mountain underneath a moonlit sky, it was classic Hollywood, I wish that stuff still existed.
Sure, this has a lot of the action/war cliches, but it was done well, it's a really great movie.
