Review of For the Bible Tells Me So (2007) by Sarah J — 11 Feb 2008
Talking about this movie makes registering worth my time. Daniel Karslake has given us a movie that is about families and love. He is trying to help us all to relate to how a gay family member affects the chemistry of his or her family. While a key figure in the story is Gene Robinson, the "openly gay bishop" in the Episcopalian Church (isn't that what every newspaper calls him), the more important connection to Bishop Robinson is the time this movie spends with his parents -- dear Southern people who love their son and are still clearly coming to grips with how you can be homosexual and still be the son they raised and take pride in.
If you don't have a gay friend, you REALLY need to see this movie. It's about understanding why it's just not necessary to have an opinion about someone's sexuality -- they are who they are. One mom in the film admits that thinking about her daughter's sexuality takes her to the place where she is thinking about her having sex. She can't go there -- but she is so happy her daughter is in her life and that she's happy.
For any parent who has gone through the process -- or is stuck somewhere along the way -- this movie helps point out the rocks so that you can cross the water without falling in. Watch it. Rent it. Buy it and donate it to your church.
