Review of For Love of the Game (1999) by J Chris J — 07 Apr 2012
First off, I knew nothing about this flick. I just assumed it was going to be another Costner baseball stroke film. I was half right.
Let's face facts here. Kevin Costner is synonymous with baseball & rightly so. You believe his passion for the game and he serves as a great theatrical ambassador.
What this was is part love letter part character study. When does a great athlete decide when to walk away? Michael Jordan did it in his prime, Babe Ruth, way after.
A great cast (I was shocked that this was a Raimi effort and not a Chin in sight though Ted has a cool cameo) and a decent script but for me the film never ensnared me. Just had a hard time cheering or caring for any of the characters.
At least they filmed in old Yankee Stadium.
