Review of Footloose (1984) by Kim B — 08 May 2010
Kick off your Sunday shoes! Awesome 80s awesomeness and some Bacon. My favorite part is Bacon's dance montage where he is shot five or six different times doing a spirited jump in the air from every angle.
Yes, it is incredibly cheesy at parts-like how every time someone says there will be no fighting tonight a fight breaks out between two hot-headed alpha males and the music sucks. The reason why I liked it though is because usually America romanticizes it's small-towns strong traditional values and quaintness.
In this film, it shows on the other hand how small-towns can also be repressive, religiously fanatical, and gossip-hungry. It's hard to believe today that rock & roll and dancing could be banned back then, but even in 1999 a town still outlawed it in Virginia.
It's relevant to today in how people want to ban Harry Potter books and rap music/grinding.
