Review of Footloose (1984) by Jordan K — 04 Mar 2015
Footloose is awful. Admit it - you may like it based on nostalgia or entertainment, but it's one of the most outdated and overdone films ever, and it overexpresses its very simplistic and over the top plot. No characters are likable, none make a real difference - Footloose is not only over the top, but really boring...
A city kid moves to a small town. Wonder if we've heard that before. In this town, dancing has been outlawed due to safety of drinking and doing drugs, but the kid persuades the city and the town's well known strict priest to change their minds for a school dance to be scheduled. Most of the film is dancing every here and there, Kenny Loggins music, and a lot of the relationship between the priest and his daughter.
Footloose's rural setting made it extremely boring to me, the dancing aspect is alright, I guess, but I never wanted to watch a film for its choreography. The acting is subpar, but always is for corny 80s teen movies. Lithgow is probably the only likable actor - the rest is outdated garbage, boring rural kids who want to make a difference and love triangles I could really care less about. It's as bad as it gets for these kinds of films in this kind of decade that made them.
