Review of Footloose (1984) by Junelkean — 03 Jul 2017
Kevin Bacon plays a city boy livin' in a lonely world, and soon meets a small town girl who's goin' anywhere. He stars in the 1983 dance coming-of-age movie, Footloose together with the reigning stars of the 80s. It tells the story of Ren (Bacon), a young man who moves to a town where dancing and rock music has been banned by the preacher (Lithgow).
Every dance sequence is executed with top-level energy and enthusiasm from Bacon, which makes him truly appealing to everyone, but unlike him, most of the characters are not as compelling in the movie. The story does not make any sense that teenagers are not allowed to dance upbeat music, but in the end, we understand where the characters' motivation are coming from, especially Bacon, Singer and Lithgow. Yet, this is an entertaining movie with a great soundtrack for a nice throwback.
VERDICT: Footloose contains enjoyable sequence of dance numbers and entertaining teenager moments, but it needs more substance to hold it.
