Review of Foo Fighters: Back and Forth (2011) by Dayne L — 18 Apr 2011
I love the Foo Fighters. I think Dave Grohl is an extremely talented singer, songwriter and musician. Foo Fighters release consistently solid, hard rocking albums and they put on an amazing live show. This documentary is the definitive account thus far of their story that goes as far back as Dave's first band Scream and of course, Nirvana and takes us right up to the recording of their new record.
The doc features everything you'd want to see as a fan of the band: extensive interviews with all band members past and present, juicy details on some of the drama that the band has dealt with over the years, live clips and the story of the two night sold out Wembley Stadium shows, all the details surrounding every record and the back story on all the band members. For us Nirvana fans, there's even a scene where Grohl, Pat Smear, Krist Novaselic and Nevermind producer Butch Vig are in a room recording together for the first time since the recording of Nevermind.
Then in the theaters, immediately following the documentary was a performance from the Foo's playing their new record front to back.
To be honest that part wasn't all that spectacular really. Watching some guys in a room playing songs into a camera gets a little boring after the first few. They did play the new songs tightly though, as if they'd been playing them for years. There wasn't a whole lot of people that left for that part so I'm sure most of the audience was into it.
