Review of Following (1999) by Alex G — 06 Jan 2011
What started it all.
Christopher Nolan is my favorite director and this movie shows exactly why, not only is he able to direct in a way that leaves your mind wondering what happens next while still trying to figure whats already happened but somehow hes also able to write all the films himself.
Its low budget but you don't need a lot of money to make a brilliant movie. Its the story that really shines and this one is all about a guy who follows people, trying to inspire himself for writing novels. Sounds a bit boring but it quickly takes a turn for the "interesting" when one of the guys he starts following turns out to be a thief, from this point the movie starts skipping through time showing whats about to happen, whats happening and whats already happened leaving you wondering which is which. And at the end when you realize that everything you just saw makes sense as a whole story, it blows you away.
Brilliantly scripted, wonderful acting from some no name folks, and probably one of the best independent films i've ever seen, Following is worth the very short 70 minutes it takes to watch.
