Review of Flyboys (2006) by Ryan G — 20 Jan 2010
"Flyboys" is a cliche driven film that tries to be so much more than it is. The special effects are poor, and the action sequences are not very well done. The characters are cardboard-like and 2-dimensional.
You have the southern hero, the African-American looking for acceptance, the white boy who doesn't like African-Americans, the one who is afraid to fly, and the captain who everyone looks up to. They go to war, saving each other occasionally, and a few fall in love.
Do I hear "Pearl Harbor" anywhere in there? Oh yes. I hated "Pearl Harbor", but this is even worse. I would like to comment on the score of the film, which is nice, and also a few elements such as the lion on the base, which gave a nice comedic backdrop.
The dialouge is poorly written, and I winced a few times while listening to it. The love story between the leads, James Franco and Jennifer Decker is actually nice in a few scenes, almost touching, but it is not enough to save this movie from being what it is.
..a crashing plane. 2/4 stars.
