Review of Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) by Wanda R — 28 Aug 2016
I give this film at least an 87% and maybe higher. In this world of conforming, pressured-to-be the same and not to embarrass. What a revelation that it's based upon a true life story. And that those who loved and supported Florence, were dedicated to looking beyond the obvious that she was tone deaf and couldn't sing, and love her and "play the game" that her husband had structured to feed her need to be complete by her love of music. The irony. The poignant truth. I loved this movie. Timely. And I think relevant in today's world. Yes, the fact that she had the money to make it a realty wasn't lost on me. It was a fact of the culture of the time. Hugh Grant won me over after so many years of his stuttering apologetic "stic" he has evolved as a relevant actor. I am impressed. Of course Meryl Streep - who could have expected any more of her? So as expected. And the "sleeper" was Simon Helberg. He was brilliant! Loved him. Subtle nuisances of expression and repressed emotion. Perfect.
I was totally engaged. I cried at the end. What more can a movie-goer hope for! Thanks, to all who made this possible.
