Review of Flirting with Disaster (1996) by Michael V — 16 Dec 2010
The entire cast does a great job with their roles and David O. Russell has everything paced well, and I thought it was pretty funny. Perhaps I was expecting something more from him. It's entertaining to see how all of these characters interact and play off of each other, but in the end it just feels like "been there, done that.
" I did love Mary Tyler Moore and George Segal playing Ben Stiller's adopted parents. Their constant bickering was well done. But really, I just felt like Charlie Kaufman was speaking about this a little bit in Adaptation.
Why does everything have to boil down to cheating and drugs? Couldn't it have been all a man's discovery of himself so that he can get some closure and be ready to be a father? Unfortunately Russell puts a lot of artificial moments in with the unique and real ones which seemed to dumb down the movie.
Flirting with Disaster might have been great when it first came out, but these days it's easy why David O Russell isn't known for this one.
