Review of Flirting with Disaster (1996) by Abishai G — 19 Aug 2008
If you're a George Segal fan, you'll really like this film. Ben Stiller and Patricia Arquette deliver very offbeat and memorable performances as a tight couple that learns to tolerate more and appreciate more Stiller's character's (Mel Coplin's) parents.
The camera work is very good and the setting is in San Diego, California. California is a very weird state, but this movie shows that people and places anywhere are either weird or normal. The dialogue is engaging and the acting is sexy.
The scene when Mel meets his brother is unforgettable. Mary Tyler Moore delivers a wonderful turn as Mel's adoptive mother; we remember how she can be coy, neurotic, hilarious, and very feminine all at the same time. Her character (Pearl Coplin) is poignantly insightful about Mel's adventures.
If you've ever felt unsure about love or life and found out you weren't that unsure after all, then this film will make you laugh. I always like to notice what people eat in the movies, so I liked that big wedge of cheese and Lonnie's quails near the end of the film (yummy).
