Review of Flight of the Red Balloon (2007) by Lucky K — 13 Apr 2008
Juliette Binoche and Hou Hsiao Hsien create a magical, idyllic stroll through the miniscule social circle of a soon-to-be troubled Parisian boy. He is slowly neglected by his busy mother (Binoche), and searches for replacement through his replacable nannies (this time, the nanny is also a Chinese filmmaker).
Hou generously lingers in his floating characters like the balloon (an angel?) that calmly watches over them. It is simply sublime.
