Review of Flight of the Red Balloon (2007) by Daniel K — 07 Jul 2008
I did not finish the film as the print was backwards (very odd) at about the beginning of the third act at Beartooth. Good pizza and Ale though. He ( still don't know how to pronounce his name) is an excellent director.
He will not soon be confused with anyone else working today. He is certainly a throwback to calmer, simpler, and more pure days that often involved men like Ford, Hawks, and Lang. he is not one to shy away from long takes and let the scen simply play itself out or linger with the viewer.
it is a bit hypnotizing and mesmerizing. He is well suited to a blend between western and eastern as is shown here. The performances and camerawork are all above reproach. I will simply have to await final judgment until I have seen the entire piece.
I suspect it will end on a slightly enigmatic note and feature additional footage of a red balloon though. Here's hoping.
