Review of Fletch (1985) by Juan C — 01 Jul 2011
Fletch is an odd and original mixture of noir like mystery mixed with slapstick comedy. This strange mix works well for much of the film and makes it much more watchable than the normal SNL tripe. In fact the plot could be worthy of a Sam Spade drama with only a few changes.
The main problem is that Chevy Chase was the last generations Adam Sandler. He is effectively caught in a stasis state of playing the same character ad infinitum. This of course leads to some quite humourous parts, but when Chevy Chase is disengaged with his character, so is the audience. This is particularly apparent when Chevy is in mortal danger witha gun pointed to his face, but still willing to crack snide jokes. Those police were scary. As was the hillbilly.
The 80's soundtrack also deserves a mention. It certainly elevates the films comedic elements.
