Review of Flesh and Bone (1993) by Jonathan T — 19 Jan 2012
One of the great American films of the 1990s; sadly, it seems to have been forgotten. I think the reviewers who disliked it had too many preconceptions and expectations about it. It is not a thriller per se, or a formula Dennis Quaid-Meg Ryan Hollywood film.
It's actually closer, dare I say, to a late Werner Herzog film with some Sam Shepard thrown in. Very intense, hypnotic, and complex. Gwyneth Paltrow's performance makes the film worth seeing alone, even though the acting, direction, cinematography, and haunting themes are all superb.
