Review of Flatliners (1990) by Mike D — 08 Sep 2012
'Flatliners' is a great example of a somewhat cheaply produced film that features all-star cast members (Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt and William Baldwin) still at the outsets of their careers.
An unusual plot gives the film a fresh feeling, as medical students flirt with death as they attempt to bring themselves as close to it as possible in order to explore what kind of experiences may result while they are theoretically brain dead.
When things begin to go awry, the interest factor rises even further, as 'Flatliners' earns its classification as a solid suspense film thanks to the hauntings the characters must endure. In terms of acting, the future stars do a great job, as the audience gets a sense of chemistry between the med student friends, all of whom have a hunger for living life on the dangerous side.
Despite its net positive aspects, 'Flatliners' does have its share of drawbacks. For example, the film feels pretty dated, considering it was released in 1990 - and while this is out of its control - a truly great film can transcend time and not feel like it was intended for the "here and now.
" Additionally, there are a few plot holes, especially near the end of the film, including the "atonement" situation for Baldwin's character. But overall, 'Flatliners' is a creative concept that strangely works thanks to its strong cast, and it's only a matter of time before Hollywood tries to ruin it by doling out an unnecessary remake.
