Review of Flashdance (1983) by Ellen B — 01 Jan 2009
Very hypocritical girl-empowerment movie. Imagine this: a young male artist gets involved with a richer older woman who calls in some favors and gets his art shown and he returns the favor by slapping her a few times.
That's this movie in a nutshell. Jennifer Beals character wants to be a proper dancer but dances erotic stuff at a night club and she gets noticed by this rich guy who knows a few people and can give her a leg up.
Every time he tries to help he gets smacked and this is supposed to mean our heroine is independent. Eventually she "lets" him help her and her dreams come true. If a guy acted this way towards a woman the movie would be about domestic violence but here it's female empowerment! Some good '80s tunes.
