Review of Flashbacks of a Fool (2008) by Andy K — 08 Feb 2009
A solid, entertaining effort by Baillie Walsh, which is let down by a weak script. With impressive acting by a cast of familiar faces from British TV and film, Flashbacks is enjoyable enough without being mind-blowing.
The main problem is the central theme of the flashback - Joe Scott (Daniel Craig) is supposed to be looking back on the summer of 1972 where we should find out the reason for his narcissism but never do.
His relationship with childhood friend 'Boots' isn't depicted in enough depth, instead the story concentrates more on his misdemanours with the village bike (Jodhi May). Bryan Ferry's "If There Is Something" fits perfectly into the soundtrack which thankfully doesn't swamp the film but helps to create the dream-like atmosphere that works extremely well.
An acquired taste for some, but well worth a watch.
