Review of Flash Point (2007) by Sally L — 14 Sep 2007
Donnie Yen accomplished the impossible; He made MMA (mixed martial arts) fighting style look exciting on screen. This proves that Donnie Yen is an excellent fight choreographer as well as (probably) the best martial arts action star right now. MMA largely consists of grappling, throwing, and takedown and it might be practical in real street fights, but rarely looks good on screen. UFC style fight is such a borefest because nothing seems to be happening. Donnie Yen should get some credit for doing something nobody thought was possible.
The plot and characters are pretty cliche and thin, but engaging enough not to lose the audience's attention. After an hour of set up, the last 30 minutes is a non-stop action extravaganza. The showdown between Donnie Yen and Collin Chou is definitely one of the best fight scenes ever shown on screen and this alone makes Flash Point a must see on big screen and a must buy on DVD. Highly recommended for all action genre fans.
