Review of Flags of Our Fathers (2006) by Peter A — 23 Jan 2009
Another great film from Clint eastwood. This is a world war 2 drama that looks at the battle for a japanese Island that produced one of the most iconic photographs ver. This was of American marines raising a flag which was then used to raise war bonds for the war effort.
The people in the photograph were lauded as heroes to which they replied that the real heroes were dead on the beaches. It is a clever film that criticizes media manipulation which resonates so much in this age.
Images of real horror are juxtaposed next to cream cakes shaped like the photo with raspberry sauce poured over. Eastwood deconstructs the American myth and shows us a truthful portrayal of what really happens.
The best line was ' Men will fight for their country but will die for their friends' This is the strongest message the movie gives. Next up Letters from Iwo Jima, the Japanese perspective.
