Review of Fixed Bayonets! (1951) by Andy A — 15 May 2009
The prototypical Sam Fuller B-picture-saurus. Low-budget, but completely convincing as the realism seeps through in Fuller's always acerbic dialogue, Fixed Bayonets might not be his best film but it certainly has that quality of being "simple and hard-hitting" that he always espoused.
Gene Evans reprises yet another lead role as the gruff Sergeant Rock, straddling a Korean War battlefield with the only politics that matter once you're on the ground facing down the enemy guns: the politics of survival.
The ending was a bit abrupt but seeing as Fuller gets his point across after the first half an hour or so I'll give the man his due.
