Review of Five Easy Pieces (1970) by Lauren H — 08 Mar 2008
There's a reason why Jack Nicholson is an icon. It has nothing to do with his wild man roles, or his current profession of playing himself. It's because of roles like this. Alternately likable and hateful, it's difficult not to be fascinated by the multi-faceted Robert.
Highlights are, of course, the 'chicken salad sandwich' sequence, but Robert's battle of class, confusion and desperation to find someplace he can belong is the centre of the film. That he never does seems a given.
Subtle performances, lovely cinematography, and some beautiful music.
