Review of Five Easy Pieces (1970) by Ryan B — 10 Jun 2008
It's hard to describe 'Five Easy Pieces' as anything BUT a deceptively complex and fascinating character study. Anyone who thinks that Jack Nicholson only specializes in playing wacky over-the-top nutjobs should check out films like this one, back when Nicholson was just about the best new thing cinema had to offer in the way of acting.
No other actor could have pulled this role off, nothing in the film feels forced, none of it is contrived. It's fast, loose, and natural, and is just about as real and gritty as cinema gets. An actor's movie if there ever was one.
