Review of Five Easy Pieces (1970) by Paul J — 21 Dec 2008
Out of the many great character studies from the 70s, this is among the very best. Nicholson has rarely been better - it's refreshing to see him so understated. The scope of this film is so intimate and subtle.
Movies like these could never be made today in Hollywood. A testament to why the 70s was a glorious time for advancing the art in cinema. Ultimately, what is this film about? Self-loathing, perhaps? It doesn't offer any answers, is certainly not politically correct, and just gives us a small moment in time that is staggeringly honest.
