Review of Five Easy Pieces (1970) by Elgan D — 01 Jul 2011
Many reviewers claim this film reminds them of European-style character studies, and I agree with that. It reminds me of a lot of other late-sixties/early-seventies American cinema--the so-called Golden Age of American cinema--in brooding sensibility.
Unlike later films it doesn't seek out what's grim and gritty, but rather lets grimness and grit speak for themselves. Its depiction of alienation is eloquent. Later films used much more vulgar or violent means to match this film's ability to provoke thought and reflection.
Nicely done.
