Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Robin L — 25 Jun 2008
Along with Aguirre and Grizzly Man (and several other films), Fitzcarraldo is concerned with what I can best describe as the relationship between the myths that drive man and the spirituality of nature. It always seems like Herzog's story is much greater than the plot on film - the characters are just avatars acting out their predestined roles.
Fitzcarraldo is a story told in it's images. Some of the scenes left me breathless: The pan across the river and the bright blue sky as they set sail, the shot of the ship emerging from and disappearing into the forest, the 340-ton ship crawling up the mountainside. These are the moments that really make the film. The fact that it was shot on location certainly shows.
