Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Stephen C — 03 Jul 2008
Completely mad film from the dream partnership of Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski.
When I say dream I mean the stuff which could become nightmares.
Kinski plays a Irish Businessman obessed with bringing opera to the forests of Brazil.
So determined is his quest that he will even resort to pulling a massive steamship over a hill to a river on the otherside.
Where most directors would have used models Herzog ACTUALLY did pull a whole steamship over a hill.
The film was fraught with difficulty with crew becoming ill or nearly killed by tribesmen,Kinski Threatening to Kill Herzog on several occassions and of course the Brazillian jungle.
Yet despite all this Herzog gives us a film of great visual beauty with some truly wondeful acting from the demnted Kinski.
A film that lingers long after you have seen it.
