Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Darryl J — 04 Nov 2008
To watch this is to see a director's imagination come to life before your eyes. Werner Herzog envisioned a 360-ton steamship being hauled up a mountain and he did it. I respect him so much for not using special effects at all.
You can certainly tell when people do and he definitely did not in this. The incredible hardships they must have faced doing this is unimaginable. Klaus Kinski is maniacally effective in this. His character in this has the most conviction I've seen in a film.
He needs to have his dreams come to life(Art imitating life much,Mr. Herzog?). The story with Fitzgerald is one that needs to go down in the halls of the "great underdogs in cinema". He truly shows up all these people who consistently put him down.
Herzog certainly shows up everyone with this incredible and staggering achievement.
