Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Madeline M — 26 Mar 2010
I didn't research this movie very carefully, so I didn't realize that for much of the movie the opera house functions as a motivation, rather than a major element of the plot. Instead, Fitzcarraldo is about the need to raise the money for the opera house.
It's amazing, really. Kinski - in his white linen suit against the rainforest - is a startling, compelling, frightening figure of hubris, although he is occasionally surprising. I found that aspect refreshing.
However, I do think that the mystical elements of the Jivaro involvement were introduced a little too suddenly, although I enjoyed the menace of the film - you spend a lot of time waiting for the next bomb to drop.
