Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Caleb M — 30 May 2011
Wow. I really need to watch Burden of Dreams, because I have a feeling the documentary about the making of this film is as good, if not better, then the actual film.
Kinski is outrageously good. Fitzcarraldo is a bit dry at times, but Kinski is never dull. You will not only buy that this guy loves opera, but that he would journey through the Amazonian jungle to bring it to the "bare-asses". The fact that we are actually seeing a steamship being carried across a mountain on-screen makes this film something of both a technical marvel, a long and often exhausting journey, and a thrill.
By the film's end we've experienced a myriad of emotions, but Herzog ends on a moment of accomplishment and pride. I don't know if that's what I would have felt if I were Fitz, but it's certainly a better ending for the film.
