Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Kenny K — 24 Mar 2012
Talk about obsession, magnificent obsession! Rarely has an actor so brilliantly captured the sheer insanity of desire, and what makes this film worth seeing is that he succeeds in his impossible goal (to literally pull a steamship over a mountain), but he does it for art: opera! And when he succeeds and gets the giant ship back in the river, and all hell breaks loose, he doesn't lose heart or the wonderful sense of accomplishment only the insanely motivated feel when they win.
This thoughtful, beautifully-shot movie makes me think about MY goals: surely, they're not as loony as Fitzcarraldo's, but then why haven't I accomplished them? Answer: I lack the right kind of insanity: BELIEF.
Don't miss.
