Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Devin M — 26 Mar 2012
Everything negative that could be said about this film is a fair criticism - it goes on forever in endlessly meandering directions, its main character is a complete mystery save his obsession with Enrico Caruso, it leads the viewer on such an overblown epic experience that one is completely drained after seeing it - yet these criticisms are precisely what make this a masterpiece.
The film is almost a documentary account of its director Werner Herzog's own obsession; at its end, when the main character has a triumphant welcoming after literally hauling a huge ship over a mountain and then successfully navigating it through previously unconquered rapids, it is very much Herzog's victory we are watching.
And it, the complete artistic success and fulfillment of an all-encompassing obsession, is indeed a sight to behold.
