Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Mark L — 03 Feb 2010
One of my favorite films, and one I haven't seen in far too long. The film that introduced me to Klaus Kinski and Werner Herzog. A wonderful tale, mostly true, about an opera fanatic who, after a number of unsuccessful business ventures, decides to raise the money to bring opera to the tiny Peruvian town where he lives by staking a claim on a rubber forest.
To do this, however, he must drag a steamship over a mountain. Which the filmmakers actually did. This bit of wonderful folly is just one of the many delights of FITZCARRALDO, along with its fine acting (especially Kinski), the beautiful photography, and Herzog's sparkling sense of absurd humor.
Popul Vuh's score is weak, but it doesn't make a major difference. I must return to this film soon.
