Review of Fist Fight (2017) by Lane Z — 25 Sep 2017
Fist Fight looked strong in the trailers and previews, but the bulk of the final film doesn't quite measure up to the final fight it rests its laurels on.
Ice Cube gets the typical treatment he usually does in comedies as the fearsome, strong-armed, stone-faced mean guy while Charlie Day slinks into a more competent version of his character from Always Sunny. It's just tough not to see him like that after 11 years in the role. Tracy Morgan, Dean Norris, and Jillian Bell as a supporting cast aren't given quite enough to make them relevant, though they appear more often than they should with their hands empty.
What would have worked more here was giving the students an anchor instead of randomly throwing a few of them at us. Cube and Day carry the film for as long as they can until it just becomes tedious for them to do something on screen just for the sake of being the face of the movie. However, the fight in the end lives up to the build up.
