Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Keith P — 09 Mar 2011
I have a mind to only watch films I know little to nothing about going into them. Or thinking I know what they're about and having that notion blown out of the water during the first few minutes. Either lends to my chances of enjoying a film or at the very least of being taken off guard to the point of amusement.
Fish Tank is an excellently crafted film, technically proficient, beautiful despite the bleak environment and chock full of believable, genuine performances. At times, one may find the film disturbingly erotic or just plain disturbing, depending on personal taste in that regard.
I daresay there's at least one scene that will startle anyone watching, if only for the sheer spontaneity of it. Fish Tank can be an uncomfortable film to watch, there's a lot of tension, sexual and otherwise.
When a movie puts you on edge, makes you squirm a bit in your seat, for whatever reason, that's a good thing. Fish Tank accomplished that in spades, for me at least. Which is all that really matters anyway, right?
