Review of First Sunday (2008) by Filippa B — 21 Jun 2008
I was looking to laugh and I got it. Katt Williams is hilarious, as is Morgan Tracy.
I swear at times, Katt Williams was channeling Prince, voice and all, and when the man yells out "thieves in the temple" in the last major scene, I almost died of laughter.
As always, with Ice Cube, there has to be a reality to the movie and those moments come with his son. It will make you tear up, it did me. Ice Cube is a brilliant straight man and you realize without his seriousness; the jokes would fall flat. Luckily, this movie is filled with laughter.
This is a feel good movie, that will have you howling. Loretta Devine is Divine as always and Chi McBride is as great as he ever was.
The Church scenes are the best, laughter wise, as well as touching. I guess maybe you have to know the situation to feel it and still laugh at it.
Morgan Tracy kills in the church, from the moment he utters "White Jesus" to the chase scene.
The whole movie is like a comic duel between Katt Williams and Morgan Tracy, especially in that church. But it's not forced, it's very natural and believable... and hilarious, as these 2 people are very different and the actors play that up to the hilt.
This movie will have you laughing out loud. It's cute and in the end, leaves you feeling good. I loved it.
